Last week was unseasonably warm in the South. It was so nice I didn’t even need a coat – in January! What a wonderful way to start a new year. The sun was shining as I drove to the office, and I turned up the music. The song switched and I couldn’t believe my ears. ‘Spirit in the Sky’ by Norman Greenbaum was playing.
You’re probably thinking, that’s a good song, Lori, but where are we going here? You see, for me, Spirit in the Sky is more than a song. Last year, my mother passed away. At her funeral, all the ladies of my generation and I got up and sang this song. We sang it for her, and we sang it for us.
The day I heard the song on the radio would have been my mother’s 86th birthday. I smiled and sang along. I felt my mother with me. But I also took it as a sign – a sign I want to share with you.
The New Year is off and running, and I’m sure you have hopes and dreams for it. But as it unfolds, don’t miss what’s speaking to you. Sometimes, it’s a song. Sometimes, it’s a place, or perhaps a loved one’s words. It’s so easy to get caught up in our schedules, or our struggles, that we wind up losing sight of what really matters.
Take a moment this week to tune in to what’s speaking to you. I guarantee it will take you further in the year ahead.
Here’s to 2017!
